Oregon Coaching Job Search - Who's in it for the Oregon Coaching Job?

holistic life coach

A lot of people are looking for coaching jobs here in Oregon. Some coaches hire for short-term positions, while other coaches stay on the job for a long time. Mullens seeks a coach who will be there for the long term. Taggart was a one and done deal, and Cristobal was lured by a suitor that scared off Oregon officials.

Willie Taggart

Oregon was one of several programs interested in hiring Taggart this offseason. Taggart reportedly was offered $20 million over five years to coach the Ducks. Taggart declined the offer. Instead, Florida State offered Taggart the coaching job. Taggart however felt strongly about the possibility of rebuilding UO. He also rejected the $30 Million offer by Florida State.

Taggart was passed over by the NFL to become a coach. He spent time at Stanford under Jim Harbaugh and at Oregon before he began his coaching career. His philosophy is focused upon excellence and discipline. He believes accountability should be the first priority. He stated that he exhorted his players towards "chasing greatness."

Willie Aranda

Aranda, who was named head coach of the Baylor Bears in 2020, has a proven track record. After winning the LSU national title in 2019, Aranda moved to Baylor and led the Bears to an 11-1 record, the Big 12 championship, and a total of 63 wins. Cal Lutheran was where he was born. After graduating from Cal Lutheran, he became a defensive coach at Utah State and Hawaii.

After Mario Cristobal's departure to Miami, Oregon is looking for a new coach. We looked at some of these coaching candidates in a Duck Territory podcast. We evaluated each candidate and discussed the pros/cons to hiring someone with coaching experience from the Pac-12.

Justin Wilcox

The University of Oregon looks very different than it did when Wilcox joined the University in late 1990s. Facilities have improved and expectations are high. Mario Cristobal, the last coach at this school, won 10 games in his final season. This included a win against Ohio State. He was harshly criticized for not winning more games. Mark Helfrich who was the former coach was also a native Oregonian. Both were fired after the season.

The Ducks are in the process of interviewing potential candidates for their head coaching job. Bob Canzano from Oregon has made contact with Wilcox and another candidate, one of which is in the NFL. The Ducks are looking to hire a coach fast. Signing day is fast approaching and each minute passes, the chance that a recruit will choose another program.

Mario Cristobal

Mario Cristobal is now the University of Miami's football head coach. He was previously the head football coach at Florida International University, and the University of Oregon. He played college football with the Miami Hurricanes. There, he was an offensive tackle and won two national championships. He also received First-Team All-Big East Conference honors, in 1992 and 1991. He received his University of Miami degree in 1993. In 2001, he earned his master's degree.

Cristobal will likely take over a team that has been in difficult times. The Hurricanes are now 7-5 and Greg Diaz, their head coach, has only won 21 matches in his three seasons at South Beach. The job security of Diaz was questioned for quite a while after Miami's dismissal of athletic director Blake James. Miami is scheduled to play Washington State later this month in the Sun Bowl.
